KENYA
Kenya is one of 53 countries that make up Africa – the
“Black Continent”. It is situated on the Eastern
side of the continent and is bordered by Tanzania in the South,
Uganda to the West, Ethiopia to the North and the Indian Ocean
to the East. It lies between longitudes 34 E and 42 E. The
Equator almost divides Kenya into two.
Kenya covers
a total of 583,000km2 and has a population of approximately
32 million people. The people of Kenya are divided into
42 different tribes under three major groups: Bantu’s,
Nilotes and Cushites.

Kenya is further divided into three major climatic regions:
Coastal Region: The Coastal region is occupied
entirely by Bantu’s. Basically the region is served
by most currents and receives convectional rainfall. The
soils here are fertile ad the area is covered by Mangrove
forests and you can find palm trees thriving mainly in the
mild microclimate of the coast.
Highland/tropical region: Mixed Nilotes
and Bantu’s occupy the Tropical region. The soils
here are fertile due to rich alluvial deposits and the main
activity is farming.
Arid/semi arid region: The arid/semi arid
region (Northern part of the country) is characterised by
erratic and unreliable rainfall. The soils here are poor
and the region is occupied by Cushites whose occupation
is Livestock keeping.
The struggle
for Kenya’s independence began in 1951 and was ultimately
gained in 1963.
Tourism is Kenya’s
second largest earner of foreign currency, second only to
Agriculture, employing approximately 500,000 people. The
presence of a wide range of superb destinations including
its many Lakes, Game Parks and Reserves, as well as Mountains
e.g. Mt. Kenya, make Kenya a land of many opportunities
for the keen traveller.
We
look froward to welcoming you to this wonderful land!
